Roundhouse resident artist Martha Pailing returns to her home town of Blackpool this week with her one woman show, Background People, at Bootleg Social on Topping Street tomorrow from 7.30pm.
Anyone who made it to the scratch performance of this original piece of theatre earlier in the year will know that is was written, created and performed by Martha herself. The audience was invited to give their feedback on the performance back in March and now Martha has developed the piece for performance at three venues Bootleg Social in Blackpool, Alphabetti Theatre in Newcastle and London’s Roundhouse this summer as part of the Last Word Festival.
Background People is a one woman show of spoken word, theatre and live art detailing a series of short absurdist stories exploring commitment, obligation and the inevitable demands that accompany decision making. It is an unashamed celebration of human messiness.
‘I stare at the shower cleaner.
If I buy it, the bottle states I must use it every day (for the rest of my life).
Am I capable of such a commitment?’
Background People explores the line between commitment and obligation (and the 107 decisions crammed in between).
Don’t miss this opportunity to see original theatre in our town created and performed by this up and coming Blackpool performer.
Background People is on for one night only Tuesday 19 June at Bootleg Social. Doors open at 7pm with the performance starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £5 and are available here or on the door.
Martha’s work has been presented at Peopling the Palace Festival, Hackney Showroom, the Royal Court and the Roundhouse. It is supported by the Roundhouse, LeftCoast and Arts Council England.
