Coinciding with major celebrations and events nationwide, on the 4th June 2018, Blott Studio will be hosting an exhibition marking the death of Emily Wilding Davison, the first martyr to the Suffrage cause.
Curated by Corrine Streetly, Marking The Martyrs will focus on the sacrifices our foremothers made and the ongoing struggle that women still face, and will feature work produced by three regional artists, Zoe Cox, Tina Warren and Corrine Streetly, and three national and international artists.
Hazel Reeves, MRBS SWA FRSA, winner of the Emmeline Pankhurst sculpture commission 2017 will be exhibiting one of her acclaimed maquettes of Emmeline, titled ‘Rise up Women.’ Also featured are Sarah Maple (winner of Saatchi Gallery’s ‘4 New Sensations’ award for an emerging artist in 2007, and a ‘Sky Academy’ arts scholarship in 2015) and Jo Harrison (designer and illustrator for various feminist organisations and charities, including the recently published book ‘Girl Up’ by founder of the Everyday Sexism Project Laura Bates).
On Saturday June 2nd the Preview event will open with an unprecedented rooftop choral performance and town centre suffrage parade. To help bring history to life ‘Seaside Stitchers’, in collaboration with ‘Aunty Social’, have produced a banner to lead the parade, and ‘Last Legs’ community workshops will be taking place to make sashes and rosettes for the choirs, including Revoe-lution community choir. Organisers are calling on other local choirs and community groups to get involved.
The performance and suffrage parade will be from 6.30pm to 7pm, followed by refreshments and a preview of the exhibition at Blott Studio from 7pm to 9pm.
The main exhibition opens on Monday 4th June, and runs until the end of the month.
Help is needed to fund the event, and if you are in a position to be able to support the Marking the Martyrs ‘Kickstarter’ campaign, the organisers would be incredibly grateful and are offering various limited edition prints as awards for your kind pledges. You will also be extended an invitation to join the contributing artists in a celebratory drink or two at the opening event on 2ndJune.
