It hardly seems possible that more than fifty years have passed since the sisters of a Salzburg abbey first put their heads and their singing voices together to solve a problem like Maria in the 1965 musical The Sound of Music.
Of course, the nuns’ answer to the conundrum was to pack the all-singing, all-dancing novice off to become governess to the seven children of the widowed Captain Georg von Trapp.
If this beloved Rogers and Hammerstein musical is right up there with whiskers on kittens as one of your favourite things, you won’t want to miss out on Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music–a very special screening of The Sound of Music at the Grand Theatre in January. The screening is complete with subtitles so that even new fans of the movie can sing along with the same growing confidence in confidence alone that Maria experienced on the way to meet her new charges.
Singing along to the numbers is just part of the evening’s fun. Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music begins with a vocal warm-up led by the evening’s host. Your host will also take you through your complimentary ‘magic moments fun pack’, which contains various props for you to use at strategic points during the film.
Now with fans worldwide, Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music began its UK tour in January 2000. If you have already attended a Sing-a-long-a show you will not be surprised to know that a fancy-dress competition will be part of the evening’s fun. Everyone who comes in costume is invited onto the stage to show off their outfits and their Sound of Music-inspired creativity. That creativity has become increasingly elaborate over the years featuring girls and boys in white dresses with blue satin sashes as well as nuns and lonely goatherds.
Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music takes place at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre on Saturday 21 January 2017 at 7pm. Tickets cost £16.50 for adults and £12 for children. Call Box Office on 01253 74 33 39 or visit blackpoolgrand.co.uk
