£25,000 sows seeds for bolder future at rock gardens

The future looks bright for Devonshire Road Rock Gardens following a £25,000 investment from Greenlands ward councillors Christine Wright and Chris Ryan.

The cash will pay for a specialist gardener to look after the gardens for the next 12 months, carrying out maintenance on the grounds as well as engaging with the local community and working closely with the Friends group to develop the area further.

A further £3,358.48 has also been donated to the councillors to provide an electricity supply to the newly revamped pavilion so that it can be used for events. An extra £1,531.34 to install and monitor CCTV equipment to prevent vandalism to the restored building has also been secured.

Local ward councillor Christine Wright said: “The Rock Gardens are a really important part of the local community and I know that residents appreciate such a calm, relaxing green space right on their doorstep.

“Making sure that it is maintained properly, kept secure and allowed to thrive is important and I’m delighted that this funding will be able to improve this community asset.”

Fellow ward councillor Chris Ryan added: “This funding will make sure that the rock gardens, which have been recently restored by the Council, continue to be looked after so that they can be enjoyed by the public for a long time.

“A lot of people have precious memories of the gardens, either from visiting with their families or being one of the many happy couples who were married there in the past. It’s a unique part of the area and it’s fantastic that we’ve been able to look after it in this way.”
